It can take up to just one Canadian Black Bear to make just one bearskin cap for the Queen's Guards. Bears are shot, often several times before dying. Many bears escape wounded and die a slow death in the woods from blood loss, gangrene, infection, dehydration, or starvation. Bears are also mothers who leave behind orphaned cubs who cannot survive on their own - a death sentence for the cubs as well.
